I was commissioned to design a "JOY" necklace about 12 years ago. I worked closely with a professional jewelry maker to design a piece that would hold two diamonds surrounding a sapphire birthstone, set in 18K gold. I needed to consider a design where all the connection points would be strong and withstand everyday wear. The asymmetrical shape required the weight to be distributed evenly, so the piece would hang from a chain with exquisite balance. We created several prototypes to make sure we could accomplish all of this. This is the result.
